Jackson Residents Unite for Breast Cancer Awareness 5K

JACKSON, Tenn. — As Halloween approaches, a dedicated group of residents in Jackson, Tennessee, are channeling their festive spirit into a charitable cause by organizing a themed 5K run.

“Fight Like A Jedi” 5K Event

The race, aptly titled “Fight Like A Jedi,” kicked off Tuesday evening on Coastland Drive, with participants donning their favorite Star Wars attire to raise funds for breast cancer support. This event aims to rally community members around a cause that affects many families in the area.

Supporting Local Women Battling Breast Cancer

All proceeds from the event will benefit the “Take Your Girls Night Out” fund, which provides financial assistance to women in West Tennessee who are battling breast cancer. Maigan Smith, assistant administrator for the Women’s Clinic PA, highlighted the fund’s purpose:

“The Take Your Girls Night Out fund helps women financially that are currently battling breast cancer. So, anyone that needs help with an electric bill, if they need car work done, if they need a new washer and dryer–we help them up to $1,000.”

Community Involvement and Awareness

Event organizers encourage attendees to wear galaxy-themed costumes, aiming to foster a sense of fellowship while raising awareness about breast cancer. Billie Jo Roe, coordinator of the “Fight Like A Jedi” event, stated:

“It’s about fellowship, getting together and representing somebody that you know. Everybody knows someone that has breast cancer or is affiliated with someone with breast cancer, so it hits close to home for a lot of people.”

The turnout for the event has exceeded expectations, with Smith noting,

“This is my 6th year and this is my biggest year as far as registrations go. I’m so excited to have such a big turnout. Of course, this year is Star Wars so I don’t know if that made any difference, but we’re really excited to kind of throw that in there and make it about hope which is what Star Wars is about.”

Focus on Women’s Health

The Women’s Clinic in Jackson is dedicated to supporting women’s health, providing services such as primary care, mammograms, and necessary lab work. Smith added:

“We are all about women’s health. We support women and we want to do everything we can to help them.”

As the evening concluded, awards were presented to participants in the 5K run, marking a successful event for a vital cause. To find out more about supporting breast cancer awareness initiatives or to contribute to the fund, interested individuals can visit the Women’s Clinic for more information.
