Ilona Maher: A Trailblazer in Women’s Rugby

Ilona Maher has emerged as a transformative figure in women’s rugby, reminiscent of how Mia Hamm elevated the profile of women’s football. As the Women’s Rugby World Cup unfolds in England, Maher is poised to draw even more visibility to the sport.

Social Media Influence

At just 29 years old, Maher has garnered over eight million followers on social media, leveraging her athletic achievements alongside a strong advocacy for body positivity. Her recent accomplishments include playing a crucial role in the United States women’s rugby team securing its first Olympic medal, triumphing over Australia to claim third place in the Paris Olympics last year.

Expanding Her Reach

Following her Olympic success, Maher made a splash in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and showcased her skills on the popular TV show Dancing with the Stars, where she finished as a runner-up. These appearances not only highlight her versatility but also broaden her impact beyond the rugby field.

Support for Women’s Rugby

Maher’s performance and visibility have attracted investment interest, such as a significant donation of US$4 million from American investor Michele Kang, aimed at enhancing the USA Women’s Rugby Sevens Team over the next four years. Kang, who also owns Lyon, a celebrated women’s football team, recognizes the potential in Maher’s influence on the sport.

A Strong Message

During her time in Paris, Maher captivated fans not only with her athletic prowess but also with engaging social media commentary. She humorously described life in the Athletes’ Village as akin to a reality TV show, even joking about seeking romance while she was there primarily to play rugby.

In a reflective interview with Bleacher Report, Maher emphasized her mission to empower young girls, stating, “What we’re trying to show is the beauty that in sports you can be a beast on the field, but also be a beauty.” She aims to encourage girls to recognize the strength and capabilities of their bodies, challenging outdated notions of femininity in sports.

Legacy and Family Support

With her roots in Vermont, Maher’s spirited personality is complemented by a profound appreciation for trailblazing female athletes like Mia Hamm. She recalls, “I remember in our gym we always had a poster of Mia Hamm, and that was always cool to look up to her.”

Her strong family ties support her journey; her father, Michael, a passionate rugby player, introduced Maher to the sport, while her mother Mieneke and sisters Olivia and Adrianna round out a close-knit family dynamic. Olivia herself has a notable social media presence, attributing to their family’s collective influence.

A Lesson in Confidence

Maher’s journey has been shaped by lessons learned from her family. A pivotal moment occurred during a softball event when her father defended her talent against an unsolicited critique from another parent. This experience instilled in her the belief that she should never feel pressured to “tone down” her abilities: “The world isn’t going to tone down for you,” she asserted.

The Future of Women’s Rugby

New Zealand rugby star Portia Woodman-Wickliffe has praised Maher for her mark on the sport, stating that her confidence and passion are vital for advancing women’s rugby into mainstream visibility. “We need to capitalize and follow her as much as we can,” Woodman-Wickliffe emphasized.

As Maher continues to rise in popularity and influence, the women’s rugby landscape is likely to benefit significantly, setting the stage for future developments both on and off the field.
