Johns Hopkins Clinches Centennial Conference Title with Late Winner
Romo-Nichols Shines in Championship Match
SWARTHMORE, PA – The Johns Hopkins women’s soccer team claimed victory in the Centennial Conference Championship on Sunday, thanks to a stunning goal from senior Maria Romo-Nichols. With her 21st career goal, Romo-Nichols secured a 2-1 win against the top-seeded Swarthmore team, solidifying the Blue Jays’ dominance in the conference.
Decisive Moments of the Match
The match, which seemed poised for extra time, took a dramatic turn in the 88th minute. Romo-Nichols, consistently a threat throughout the game, received the ball from about 40 yards out. As she made her way towards the goal, she skillfully evaded a defender and launched a powerful left-footed shot to the far post, eluding the Swarthmore goalkeeper Lila Travers to secure the championship-winning goal.
First Half Highlights
In the first half, the Blue Jays dominated possession, taking a whopping 15 shots compared to Swarthmore’s zero. Their efforts paid off in the 24th minute when senior Ella Macko initiated a swift transition play. After receiving the ball near midfield, Macko passed it to junior Caroline Marcus, who then set up Romo-Nichols. The well-formed attack culminated in Marcus sending a precise shot inside the far post, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Garnet Equalize and Challenge
The second half saw a different strategy from Swarthmore (14-3-3), who took advantage of their first scoring opportunity in the 49th minute. Sydney Ross’s initial shot was blocked, but the rebound fell to Jordan Vrees, who capitalized and leveled the score from 12 yards out, finding the net over Blue Jay goalie Ella Kruntchev.
Late Game Tension
With the score tied at 1-1, Johns Hopkins mounted further pressure. They launched multiple shots in quick succession, but were thwarted by Travers, who had replaced starting goalie Dhalia Bedward at halftime. For the Blue Jays, the flurry of attempts did not yield a second goal until Romo-Nichols’ brilliant final moment.
Championship Significance
This victory marked the Blue Jays’ 16th title in the Centennial Tournament and their 18th overall conference championship, including two titles prior to the tournament’s inception in 2001. With this win, Johns Hopkins also earned an automatic qualification for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, with the bracket slated for announcement on November 10 at 11 AM.
