Temporary Road Closures for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Sunderland

Sunderland City Council has released details regarding necessary road closures associated with the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup, taking place at the Stadium of Light. These closures aim to enhance the safety of all participants and spectators during the event.

Traffic Regulation Orders

To facilitate the event, the council has issued two temporary traffic regulation orders:

  • Fanzone Event: Scheduled from August 22 to August 23, with road closures commencing at 10 AM on August 21 until noon on August 23.
  • Main Event: Occurring on August 22, resulting in wider area closures from 12:01 AM on August 21 until 11:59 PM on August 22.

  • St Mary’s Way
  • Paley Street
  • Eden Street West
  • Garrison Field Road
  • Plater Way

Main Event Closures:

  • Sheepfolds North
  • Sheepfolds Road
  • Easington Street
  • Easington Street North
  • Easington Street North Back
  • Wilson Street
  • Wilson Street North Back
  • Brooke Street
  • Brooke Street North Back
  • Millennium Way
  • Stobart Street
  • Hay Street
  • Stadium Way
  • Vaux Brewery Way
  • A1018 North Bridge Street Southbound
  • Bridge Street Northbound

Exemptions and Diversions

The road closures will allow for exemptions for emergency service vehicles and those connected to the event. Additionally, alternative routes will be signposted through the nearby highway network where applicable.

The council emphasized that these traffic prohibitions will only be active as indicated by the relevant traffic signs to minimize inconvenience to the public.

Advance Planning Advised

In light of the road closures, Sunderland City Council recommends that motorists plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel. Residents and businesses in the affected zones are encouraged to make necessary arrangements to accommodate these changes.
