The Rise of Cosplay Dating in China
In recent years, a unique dating trend has emerged among young women in China, particularly in urban areas. This trend, known as cosplay dating, allows individuals to escape the often demeaning world of traditional dating apps by hiring actors to portray their favorite characters from anime and video games. This phenomenon is highlighted by the experiences of a Beijing university student, Maman, who decided to hire a “cosplay boyfriend.”
Exploring New Avenues in Companionship
Frustrated by the difficulty in finding compatible dates, Maman, age 22, turned to online platforms to find cosplay actors who offered companionship services. Her date included activities such as drawing, taking fun photographs in various locations, and discussing their favorite characters. “Virtual reality dating, and cosplay dating has helped women increase their self-awareness and allows a deeper understanding of what they want in relationships,” Maman explained.

From ‘Leftover Women’ to Self-Awareness
In a culture where unmarried women over the age of 30 are often labeled as “leftover women,” the rise of movements like “boy sober” reflects a broader rejection of societal expectations regarding marriage. This trend is particularly pronounced amid a declining birth rate and increasing government measures aimed at encouraging marriage and childbirth. Many young women, like Xuanzi of Dalian, are opting for experiences like hiring a cosplay boyfriend instead of dating in traditional ways, citing a collective decision to prioritize personal growth over societal pressures.
“Just like in virtual reality games where the female lead can freely choose her route, in real life ‘boy sober’ is simply changing the main task to self-growth,” Xuanzi noted.
Gender Dynamics and Changing Perspectives
The “boy sober” movement is primarily embraced by feminists and urban women who are dissatisfied with the gender dynamics they encounter in traditional relationships. Scholar Pan Wang from the University of New South Wales observed that many women are turning away from marriage, frustrated by the uneven distribution of domestic responsibilities and societal pressures. “Women are rejecting marriage because of the unequal distribution of domestic work, male chauvinism, and intense social pressure,” she stated.
A growing number of women are also adopting alternative approaches to companionship, including virtual relationships with AI chatbots and online gaming interactions. Maman herself expressed discomfort with the patriarchal attributes displayed by potential partners in her past relationships.
The Impact of Dating Apps
Recent studies indicate a dramatic decline in marriages in China, with only 6.1 million marriages recorded last year—a stark decrease from the figures reported in 2013. Economic factors, such as the high costs associated with childcare and housing, are seen as contributing to this decline.
Many young people, approximately 42%, express disinterest in seeking romantic relationships, as revealed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ 2022 Report on the Mental Health of College Students.
Redefining Relationships
The shift towards cosplay dating and other unconventional forms of companionship showcases the evolving landscape of romantic interactions. Maman notes that choosing a female cosplay actor as a date feels safer and aligns with her emotional needs. Cosplay actors, like Lexie Chang, emphasize emotional support over romantic intentions in their interactions with clients, often acting as listeners and comforters.
“As society changes, more women are focused on self-realization rather than traditional roles like marriage or childbirth,” Chang added.
Rejection of Traditional Expectations
As this trend continues to grow, many women express a reluctance to compromise on their standards for relationships. Leta Hong Fincher, author of *Leftover Women*, points to this increasing feminist consciousness and the shift towards valuing friendships and self-care over societal expectations of marriage.
In conclusion, the burgeoning interest in cosplay dating reflects a significant cultural shift, with young women carving out their paths in companionship and personal growth, away from traditional structures that often fail to meet their needs.
