PORTLAND, Ore. — A vibrant addition to the women’s soccer landscape is on the horizon as Portland Cherry Bombs FC prepares to join the USL W League in May 2026. The team is inspired by Portland’s influential riot grrrl movement, intertwining sports with the city’s rich cultural legacy.

About the Team

The announcement of Portland Cherry Bombs FC came from COLLiDE Sport, a creative marketing agency that now oversees four teams, including the Portland Pickles baseball team and Portland Bangers FC.

“We built the Cherry Bombs to embody everything that makes Portland electric, fearless creativity, unapologetic individuality, and the belief that sports can be a canvas for culture,” stated Alan Miller, President of COLLiDE. “This team isn’t just joining the W League; it’s detonating a new era for women’s soccer in the Northwest.”

Inspiration Behind the Name

The name “Cherry Bombs” draws directly from The Runaways’ classic anthem “Cherry Bomb,” and celebrates the 1990s riot grrrl movement. This cultural era saw bands like Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill use music as a powerful tool for empowerment and creativity.

Joel Nash, USL’s Senior Vice President of Youth and Pre-Professional programs, expressed enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to see the Cherry Bombs come to life. The brand embodies the passion, creativity, and edge that reflects the mission of this team while honoring the trailblazers who came before it.”

A launch event was held at Portland’s Lloyd Center, featuring notable figures including Miller, Cherry Bombs owner and former Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan, and General Manager Courtney Schmidt.
