Simone Biles and Riley Gaines Resolve Social Media Dispute
| Updated June 10, 2025
Background of the Feud
The conflict between Olympic champion Simone Biles and former All-American swimmer Riley Gaines has come to a close. Biles issued an apology to Gaines on social media platform X, which Gaines accepted.
Biles’ Apology
In her apology, Biles acknowledged that her comments were inappropriate. “The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for,” she stated.
Gaines’ Response
Gaines accepted Biles’ apology, addressing the personal attacks made against her. She remarked, “I accept Simone’s apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She’s still the greatest female gymnast of all time.”
Despite accepting the apology, Gaines highlighted that Biles’ comments still warranted discussion. She emphasized, “Sports ARE inclusive by nature. Anyone can and everyone SHOULD play sports. Competition, on the other hand and by definition, is exclusive. So the idea of ‘competitive equity’ is nonsensical.”
Concerns Over Women’s Sports
Gaines argued that the implications of their debate extend beyond personal exchanges, stating, “The boys are publicly humiliating the girls. To suggest that women and girls must be silent or ignore a boy who is PUBLICLY hurting or humiliating them is wrong.”
Call to Action
Gaines urged Biles to become actively involved in advocating for women’s sports. “I agree with you that the blame is on the lawmakers and leaders at the top… I welcome you to the fight to support fair sports and a future for female athletes. Little girls deserve the same shot to achieve that you had,” she added.
The Future of the Dialogue
While the private feud appears to be resolved, the broader conversation about women in sports remains vital. As noted by Gaines, Biles possesses a substantial platform with millions of followers, and her involvement could significantly impact advocacy efforts for female athletes.
