Rikki’s Women’s Sports Bar Set to Enhance San Francisco’s Sports Scene
San Francisco is preparing for a new landmark in its sports culture with the opening of Rikki’s Women’s Sports Bar, scheduled for early June 2025. This establishment will be the city’s first sports bar dedicated exclusively to honoring the achievements in women’s athletics, coinciding with the Pride Month celebrations.
Location and Concept
Rikki’s will be located at 2223 Market Street, a site previously home to popular venues such as the 2223 Restaurant & Bar and Jake’s. The bar aspires to create a vibrant atmosphere not only for viewing sports but also for building community among women’s sports enthusiasts.
Inspiration and Community Integration
Following the trend set by other successful sports bars focused on women’s sports across the United States, including Seattle’s Rough and Tumble and Portland’s The Sports Bra, Rikki’s aims to provide a welcoming environment for fans to gather, interact, and enjoy culinary offerings while supporting their favorite teams. “With the additions of Bay FC to the NWSL in 2024 and the Valkyries to the WNBA in 2025, this is a critical time of growth for women’s professional sports in the Bay Area,” stated Sara Yergovich, Co-Founder of Rikki’s.
Honorary Legacy
The bar is named after Rikki Streicher, a prominent figure in San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ and women’s sports communities. Streicher was the owner of the renowned lesbian bars Maud’s and Amelia’s and played a significant role in founding the Federation of Gay Games. Her legacy is reflected in Rikki’s mission to foster inclusivity and community.
Programming and Events
Beyond just being a sports-watching venue, Rikki’s is committed to offering diverse programs that include:
- Watch parties for major events in the WNBA and NWSL.
- Trivia nights focused on women’s sports history.
- Special events celebrating female athletes and sports leaders.
Co-Founder Danielle Thoe shared, “We are building this space with and for the local community of women’s sports fans.” Their collaboration began in a soccer setting and aims to create a dedicated space for fans to enjoy and support women’s sports together.
Fundraising Success
As of May 3, Rikki’s successfully reached its fundraising target, with over $425,000 raised through the crowdfunding platform WeFunder, thanks to the backing of more than 235 investors. Yergovich and Thoe expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “We are so proud to be part of this wonderful community.”
Anticipated Opening
While the initial opening date was set for May, additional renovations delayed the launch, which is now expected to transpire in early June, just before San Francisco Pride events. Progress on the site is visible, with updates shared on social media, including developments of the inaugural team.
Future Endeavors
Rikki’s will be among several significant additions to the Castro district, joining the newly renovated Castro Theatre. Although the specific reopening date for the theatre remains unannounced, it is anticipated to welcome visitors in the near future, further energizing the local community.
