Addressing the Need for Women’s Sportswear Innovations

As women’s participation in sports continues to rise, a pressing issue has emerged: the inadequacy of sportswear designed specifically for female athletes. While many women are breaking boundaries in various sports, the gear available often fails to accommodate their unique physiological needs.

Historical Context of Gendered Sportswear

Traditionally, women’s sports clothing has been designed through a biased lens, often leading to the “shrink it and pink it” mentality. This approach, noted by industry experts, indicates a trend where men’s products are merely scaled down for women without adequate consideration for fit or functionality.

The Impact of Ill-Fitting Gear

Recent research sheds light on the discomfort women face with existing sports footwear. A study by the European Club Association revealed that up to 80% of female football players at elite levels experience regular discomfort in their boots. Women’s foot anatomy differs significantly from men’s, encompassing aspects like higher arches and different width ratios. Consequently, the failure to create footwear that accounts for these variations has led to injuries and decreased performance for female athletes.

Voices of Change

Prominent athletes are speaking out against these shortcomings. Allyson Felix, a decorated track and field athlete, emphasizes the detrimental effects of using footwear that isn’t designed for women. “For years, I was competing at the highest level in footwear that simply wasn’t made for me… our feet are shaped differently,” she states. This highlights the urgent need for designs tailored specifically for female athletes.

“I’ve had injuries and discomfort that I now realise could have been avoided if the equipment had been made with women in mind from the start.”

Shifting Paradigms in Sports Apparel

Brands like LUCA and Saysh, founded by athletes, are revolutionizing the market by focusing on female-specific needs. These innovations bring much-needed attention to the performance aspects of women’s sportswear rather than simply focusing on aesthetics. Jessica Watson, another advocate for change, criticizes the prevalent emphasis on making women’s sportswear visually appealing over functional, stating: “So many shorts and leggings are designed for aesthetics first – making your bum look rounder… that’s not what I need or want when I’m training at a serious level.”

New Developments in Women’s Footwear

Significant strides have been made recently as illustrated by Guinness’s partnership with IDA Sports to launch women’s rugby boots tailored to the female fit. These boots debuted in the 2025 Women’s Six Nations Rugby, marking a historic shift in the recognition of women’s needs in sports equipment.

The Road Ahead

Industry professionals stress that to unlock the full potential of women’s sports, there is an urgent need for comprehensive research and development targeting female athletes. As highlighted by designer Melissa Battifarano, proper inclusion of women’s diversity in testing and design processes can lead to advancements that support performance and comfort.

The stories of female athletes and entrepreneurs underscore a pivotal point: when women are involved in every aspect of the design process, the benefits extend beyond individual performance, impacting the entire scope of women’s sports.

Conclusion

The continued success of women’s sports depends critically on the industry’s ability to adapt and provide apparel that prioritizes performance and comfort. As conversations about gender equity and representation grow, the push for better healthcare, workplace policies, and innovative design will help ensure that in the world of sport, “gear made for women” is more than just a checkbox—it becomes a standard.
