Rekha Gupta, Delhi’s New Chief Minister, Declares “Miracle” Appointment a Step Forward for Women in Politics
Rekha Gupta, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Delhi and a prominent BJP leader, has described her selection as a “miracle” and a significant milestone for women in politics. Her ascent to this role signifies a transformative moment for female representation in governance.
In her first address to the media after being selected, Gupta committed to accountability, asserting that anyone involved in corruption would have to justify their actions. “It’s a miracle and a new motivation. If I can be Chief Minister, then the path is clear for all women… Those who have been corrupt must account for every single rupee,” she stated passionately.
Expressing her gratitude towards the Bharatiya Janata Party’s leadership for their trust in her capabilities, Gupta noted, “It is a monumental responsibility. I thank PM Modi and the party’s high command for believing in me. I will approach my responsibilities with the utmost integrity. My primary focus will be to fulfill the commitments we made as a party, and foster teamwork among our 48 MLAs.”
Gupta will officially take the oath of office today at Ramilia Maidan in New Delhi, becoming the fourth woman to hold the role of Chief Minister in the capital. She follows a lineage of women leaders from the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party, succeeding Atishi in this pivotal role.
As an elected member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, Gupta has a background that includes serving as the general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and as a member of its national executive committee. In these positions, she has been at the forefront of campaigns advocating for the welfare of women and marginalized groups.
The announcement of her candidacy came after significant speculation about the next Chief Minister following the Delhi assembly elections, the results of which were announced on February 8.
