Challenges of Women’s Participation in Lagos State Politics

The Lagos High Court recently declared the removal of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa as unconstitutional, raising significant concerns about the political landscape for women in the state. This ruling not only reinstated Obasa but also effectively ended the brief term of Honourable Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, a position from which she had recently emerged.

The Significance of Mojisola Meranda’s Tenure

Meranda’s ascension to the role of Speaker was initially perceived as a watershed moment for female representation in Lagos State politics. Aspirations were high for a shift towards increased gender equity, but her sudden departure underscored existing challenges that women face in the political arena.

Gender Disparity in Political Representation

Women have consistently demonstrated their integral role in electoral politics within Lagos State, often supporting candidates from the background without occupying visible leadership roles. This lack of representation is reflected in the statistics: of the 57 local councils in the state, just 10 are led by women, and only four of the 40 lawmakers in the Lagos Assembly are female.

  • Leading female local councilors include:
  • Dr. Funmilayo Akande-Muhammed (Apapa-Iganmu LCDA)
  • Hon. Mrs. Bolatito Abiodun Shobiwale (Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA)
  • Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun (Epe LG)
  • Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba (Ijede LCDA)
  • Hon. Banjo Adeola Adebisi (Ikorodu North LCDA)
  • Hon. Bada Abolanle Sammy (Ikosi-Isheri LCDA)
  • Hon. Adu Rasheedat Abiodun (Iru-Victoria Island LCDA)
  • Hon. Essien Imolola Rashidat (Lagos Mainland LG)
  • Hon. Olabisi Adebajo (Mosan-Okunola LCDA)
  • Hon. Ramotallahi Hassan Akinola (Oriade LCDA)

The Impact of Recent Developments

Meranda’s resignation has raised alarms regarding the viability of a progressive feminist agenda in Lagos State. Observers express concern that her abrupt departure may discourage other women from pursuing political ambitions. These trends highlight the persistent cultural barriers that perpetuate gender inequality in governance.

Broader Implications of Gender Inequality

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize gender equality as a critical component of societal progress, yet Nigeria struggles with a significant gender gap in political empowerment, ranking 136th out of 146 countries according to the 2024 Global Gender Gap Index. This report also noted a slight improvement in ministerial representation from 10.7% to 17.6% since 2023, illustrating the slow pace of change.

Expert Insights on Political Challenges

Legal expert Malachy Ugwummadu pointed to heightened challenges for women in Nigerian politics, emphasizing that incidents like Meranda’s removal illustrate a troubling trend of diminishing female agency. Ugwummadu highlighted the irrational dynamics at play within political structures, questioning the overall commitment to gender parity.

Ugwummadu asserted, “Once it’s clear that those are the variables at play, in terms of uncertainty in the rules, then it behoves the victims… to further organise and mobilise able men of conscience.”

Call for Greater Gender Inclusion

Abimbola Bankole, a political analyst, commented on the state of gender equality in Lagos, suggesting that recent developments reflect a regression in female leadership opportunities. She argued for stakeholders to prioritize gender parity to foster a more inclusive political environment.

Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of Action Aid Nigeria, asserted that systemic efforts are needed to enhance women’s participation in governance, highlighting the necessity for laws that protect against gender-based violence and promote women’s rights in all spheres.

Conclusion

The current political climate in Lagos State emphasizes the urgent need for reforms aimed at enhancing women’s representation and influence in governance. As stakeholders grapple with these challenges, the call for collective action remains vital to ensure that women’s voices are not only heard but are also pivotal in shaping the political landscape.
