Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Card Breaks Records with $660,000 Sale
In a historic event for women’s sports memorabilia, Caitlin Clark’s “2024 Panini Flawless WNBA Platinum Rookie Logowoman Patch Auto” card has sold for an astonishing $660,000 during the Fanatics Collect Premier Auction held last Thursday. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a sports card featuring a female athlete.
A Glimpse into the Auction
The one-of-a-kind (1/1) rookie card, which prominently features Clark’s signature and the inscription “769 points and counting,” was recently unveiled on the online marketplace Whatnot by collector Lil Pullman. Following its discovery, it was quickly sent to Fanatics Collect for auction.
Initially, the card entered the bidding at $336,000, and after a competitive series of 26 bids, it ultimately sold for a price that reflects Clark’s burgeoning status as a sports icon.
Rising Star in Women’s Sports
Even prior to her debut in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark had gained considerable recognition in women’s basketball. A three-time All-American and two-time College Player of the Year, she also holds the title of the NCAA women’s basketball all-time leading scorer. This impressive background has fueled high demand for her rookie cards among collectors.
Previous Records and Trends
The $660,000 sale eclipsed Clark’s own record set just four months earlier, when her autographed “2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Gold Vinyl 1/1” fetched $366,000 at a Goldin auction. This amount had itself surpassed the previous record of $266,400, paid for a 2003 NetPro autographed Serena Williams card in May 2022. Notably, four years ago, the record stood at only $34,440 for a Mia Hamm card.
In an indicative sign of Clark’s rising popularity, her recent sale not only shattered existing records but also showcased a staggering 6,100 percent increase over the previous top-selling non-Caitlin WNBA card, which was Sabrina Ionescu’s “2020 Panini Prizm WNBA Black Gold” card valued at $10,800 in February 2023.
Collector’s Craze and Future Prospects
With the recent auction, ten of Clark’s cards have now been sold for over $100,000, and 14 others have sold for amounts exceeding her current annual salary of $78,066 as a player for the Indiana Fever. Notably, her top two selling cards have a combined valuation that surpasses her entire four-year contract worth $338,056.
Market interest remains robust for Caitlin Clark cards. Reports from the Sports Collectors Digest indicate that between July 1 and July 21, over five cards sold for amounts ranging from $20,000 to $23,000, while 33 cards sold for prices between $10,000 and $20,000 during the same period.
Looking Ahead
Moreover, another Clark card from the recent Panini Rookie Royalty WNBA release, featuring her signature and the inscription “ROY 24,” is currently on auction and holds a bid of $180,000. Experts predict this amount could climb even higher by its auction end date of August 10, 2025, especially in light of this recent record sale.
In a significant endorsement of her impact on the sports card market for female athletes, Caitlin Clark entered into a multi-year agreement with Panini in March 2024 while still in college. Just over a year later, she is not only making waves within the WNBA but also reshaping the landscape for collectibles in women’s sports.
