“This event creates accessible opportunities for female student-athletes to grow and succeed during their time at Bemidji State,” stated Jesse Katz, the event organizer. “The support from this event helps us become a true destination university for women’s athletics in the region, offering experiences and resources that set our programs apart. By investing in these athletes, supporters directly enhance their college journey and open doors to opportunities they may not otherwise have.”
Tournament Structure and Outcomes
This year, the tournament featured 29 competing teams, leading to a thrilling three-way tie for first place. Ultimately, the team composed of Clint Cornell, Greg Cornell, Krisi Fenner, and Kurt Fenner emerged as the winners.
History of the Tournament
The Howe-Welle Tournament was launched in 2019 as a revival of the Lady Beaver Golf Tournament, which successfully ran from 1983 until 2010. This event pays homage to Ruth Howe and Jeanette Welle, two prominent figures in BSU’s women’s athletics history. Howe was a coach in multiple women’s sports and a foundational member of the program, while Welle is recognized for her long-standing support of Beaver athletics.
Conclusion
As the Howe-Welle Women’s Athletics Golf Tournament continues to evolve, it plays an integral role in promoting and sustaining women’s athletics at Bemidji State University, ensuring that female athletes are provided with the necessary resources and opportunities to thrive.
