Professor Rani Devi Rawat Joins Politics with BJP, Aims for Women’s Empowerment in Haryana
In a notable development within Haryana’s political landscape, Professor Rani Devi Rawat, a distinguished environmental scientist, has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move signifies a blend of her extensive academic background and budding political aspirations.
A Scholarly Background
At the age of 50, Rani Devi boasts an impressive academic track record. She completed her PhD at IIT Delhi between 1999 and 2005 and has held significant positions in academia, including Dean of the Faculty of Science and Professor at Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU) in Sirsa. Her professional journey includes international roles, such as serving as a Visiting Faculty for the UNDP in Ethiopia and being recognized as a European Commission Fellow at the Technical University Eindhoven, Netherlands. Additionally, she earned the title of Young Scientist from the British Council in 2009 and was recognized among the IBC Top 100 Scientists by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge in 2012.
Political Aspirations and Family Legacy
Rani Devi’s transition into politics is deeply rooted in her family background, as she is married into a well-known political family in the Palwal district. She honors the legacy of her father-in-law, the late Chaudhary Bhagwan Sahay Rawat, who served as an MLA from Hathin. Her connection to governance is further emphasized through her marriage to a senior officer in Haryana’s food supply department and her commitment as a mother of two.
Vision for Women Empowerment
During her induction ceremony led by Haryana BJP President Pandit Mohan Lal Badoli, Rani Devi articulated her admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the nation, especially regarding women’s empowerment. She stated, “Schemes like Lado Lakshmi are not just policies; they are instruments of social transformation. As India embraces 33% reservation for women in legislatures, it is time for more women leaders with strong academic and professional backgrounds to step forward. I want to dedicate my knowledge, experience, and energy to serve the people of Haryana,” emphasizing her commitment to public service.
Future Plans and Political Strategy
Rani Devi has initiated plans for a mass membership drive in the Rawat Pal area, aiming to involve the local community in the BJP’s vision for Haryana. Her political entry is symbolic of increasing representation for women and intellectuals in state politics, a significant shift in a region characterized by historical gender imbalances. Strategically, her connection to the Hathin constituency, where her father-in-law’s reputation still resonates, positions her favorably in the political arena.
