Emphasizing Women’s Health on International Women’s Day 2025
On International Women’s Day 2025, Queen Máxima has strongly advocated for enhanced and equitable healthcare for women. Her commitment to this cause was spotlighted during her attendance at a significant meeting organized by WOMEN Inc. at Amsterdam UMC.
Addressing Gender Bias in Medical Research
In a recent post shared by the Dutch Royal Family, it was highlighted that historically, medical research predominantly focused on men, often setting their bodies as the reference standard. This approach has inadvertently led to the neglect of women’s health concerns.
Impact on Women’s Diagnoses
This gender bias resulted in delayed diagnoses for several conditions affecting women compared to their male counterparts, particularly evident in areas such as cardiovascular diseases. The Palace elaborated that research and treatment for various female-specific conditions, including those linked to hormones like severe menstrual issues, menopause, and endometriosis, remain significantly behind.
Queen Máxima’s Engagement at the Meeting
During the event, Queen Máxima co-hosted with Minister Agema of Health, Welfare, and Sport, focusing on strategies to improve women’s health. As part of the proceedings, she was presented with the inaugural copy of the book titled ‘Diagnosis: Woman.’
About ‘Diagnosis: Woman’
Authored by Emily Dwass, this insightful book delves into how gender bias within medical research can lead to misdiagnosis and various health complications unique to women. It emphasizes the urgent need for a shift in medical research methodologies to ensure that women’s health is adequately prioritized and addressed.
