The Importance of Protein for Weight Loss Medication Users

As the obesity epidemic continues to grow, many individuals are turning to weight-loss medications, particularly GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (found in drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic). While effective for weight loss, these medications raise concerns about muscle mass loss during the weight-loss process. Recent research provides clarity on the importance of protein consumption in mitigating these effects.

Understanding Muscle Mass Loss on Weight Loss Medications

Weight loss can occur rapidly when using medications, but this process often leads to the reduction of not just fat, but also essential lean muscle mass. Losing muscle can negatively impact metabolism, blood sugar levels, and overall health, potentially hindering weight loss efforts. A study presented at ENDO 2025 highlighted that increasing protein intake may be a straightforward solution to preserve muscle mass while using these medications.

Study Insights: What Did the Research Reveal?

The study tracked 40 adults with obesity over a three-month period. Among the participants, 23 were on semaglutide, while the remaining 17 adhered to a lifestyle intervention program called “Healthy Habits for Life.” Researchers assessed changes in muscle mass across both groups.

Findings indicated that while the semaglutide group lost more weight, the decline in muscle mass was similar for both groups. Factors such as age, gender, and lower protein intake were linked to greater muscle loss in those on semaglutide. Consequently, the researchers concluded that elevated protein consumption could help mitigate muscle loss associated with semaglutide.

Why is Protein Critical for Muscle Maintenance?

Protein serves as a vital building block for muscles. According to Scott Keatley, RD, “Protein provides the building blocks necessary to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, the process through which the body repairs and builds muscle tissue.” Sufficient protein intake is crucial for muscle retention; insufficient protein can force the body to break down muscle to meet energy demands.

The Role of Protein While on GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide, work by reducing appetite. This can lead some users to consume less protein and lean more towards carbohydrate-heavy foods, which are generally better tolerated, especially in the presence of nausea. According to Sonya Angelone, RDN, it is vital to maintain adequate protein consumption to avoid excessive muscle loss during weight loss. Reduced muscle mass can lead to quicker weight regain, as muscle plays a key role in burning calories.

Moreover, protein contributes to satiety. Angelone notes, “Eating more protein helps you feel full longer, aiding overall calorie reduction, which is beneficial for weight loss.”

Recommended Protein Intake for GLP-1 Users

If you are unsure about your protein requirements while on GLP-1 medication, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for tailored recommendations. Dr. Kais Rona, MD, suggests that affected individuals aim for 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. He also emphasizes the importance of resistance training to help maintain muscle mass.

Effective Protein Sources and Intake Strategies

The body can absorb 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal for optimal muscle repair and growth. Hence, it is advisable to spread protein intake across multiple meals throughout the day, which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and potential snacks. Lean options such as fish, chicken, tofu, eggs, and legumes are recommended as aligned with dietary needs.

Fiber-rich foods, including beans and quinoa, are beneficial for those using GLP-1 medications, particularly since they can help manage gastrointestinal side effects. For dairy tolerators, options like Greek yogurt and cottage cheese also provide substantial protein.

Finally, incorporating exercise is crucial. Keatley advises pairing any protein increase with a commitment to resistance training, which plays a vital role in preserving lean muscle mass as well as bone density during weight loss.

Conclusion

Balancing protein intake while using weight loss medications is essential in preserving muscle mass and ensuring effective weight management. By understanding the significance of protein and actively incorporating it into your diet, you can enhance your overall health and support your weight loss efforts.
