Salah Obayya: Pioneering Nanophotonics in Egypt

In 2012, Salah Obayya made a significant career shift from his role at the University of Glamorgan, now part of the University of South Wales in the UK, to become the head of a new initiative at Zewail City of Science and Technology located in Giza, Egypt. This decision marked a bold step into the realm of research and technology development.

Setting a New Course in Research

Recruited to establish the Center for Photonics and Smart Materials (CPSM), Obayya’s mandate was to spearhead advanced research in nanophotonics. This field explores the interaction of light with nanoscale materials and is crucial to developing innovative technologies.

A Vision for Higher Education

Obayya took on this challenge at Zewail City with a vision to influence the landscape of higher education across Africa. His move was not just about personal career growth; it was aimed at shaping the future of educational institutions on the continent by fostering a research-oriented environment.

A Leap of Faith

Leaving a stable academic position was a risky choice for Obayya, but he embraced the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of science and technology in Egypt. His work at CPSM aims to cultivate innovation and attract talent to the region.

Conclusion

Through his leadership at Zewail City, Salah Obayya exemplifies the drive to elevate scientific research in Africa. His commitment to advancing nanophotonics research not only benefits the local community but also enhances the global scientific landscape.
