Throggs Neck, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team showcased an impressive performance in their matchup against Purchase College on Thursday evening. The Privateers achieved a clean sweep, winning the match with scores of 25-7, 25-12, and 25-12, improving their season record to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the Skyline Conference. In contrast, the Panthers now stand at 2-10, lacking a win with a significant deficit of 0-2 in the same conference.

Match Highlights

Maritime displayed phenomenal teamwork and strategy, ending the night with a hitting percentage of .235, which included 26 kills alongside only 10 errors on 68 attempts. The team also excelled in serving, delivering 15 aces throughout the match.

Set-by-Set Breakdown

  • First Set:

    The Privateers initiated the match with an exceptional hitting percentage of .320, achieving 9 kills while committing just one error. Starting strong, they established a swift lead, reaching 12-1 early on, capped by a decisive kill from Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY) to advance the score to 18-4. Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) concluded the set with a kill, securing a dominant 25-7 victory.

  • Second Set:

    In the second set, Maritime continued their momentum with Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) serving the opening four points. They maintained an 11-2 lead before Purchase attempted to narrow the gap at 11-5. However, Maritime retaliated with a formidable 10-0 scoring streak led by Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY), ultimately winning the set 25-12.

  • Third Set:

    Purchase made a brief emergence in the third set by gaining its first lead, but a pivotal kill from Pavarini ignited a remarkable 10-0 run, pushing Maritime ahead to 14-5. Following a couple of points from the Panthers, Maritime struck back with another eight-point streak, with Nicole Scourakis (Hampton Bays, NY) contributing three aces during this surge, leading to a final score of 25-12.

Key Player Performances

Pavarini led the Privateers with eight kills alongside a hitting percentage of .333, contributing nine assists and five aces to her performance. Weist supported with seven kills at an impressive .400 hitting average, while Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) delivered six kills and boasted a .357 hitting percentage. Defensively, Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) each recorded eight digs. Thiel dished out 14 assists, while Scourakis finished with four aces and five digs.

Opposing Team Insights

For the Purchase Panthers, Natalia Leite secured a match-high with 11 digs, while Maya Brown contributed five of the team’s six aces.

Next Up for Maritime

The Maritime College team will head out for a two-match road trip, starting with a visit to St. Joseph’s LI on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 7:00 PM. With the current season showing promise, fans will be eager to see how Maritime continues to progress in the Skyline Conference.
