FARMVILLE, Va. — In a spirited contest, the Longwood women’s tennis team started strong with straight-set victories on courts five and six, taking a 2-1 lead against Presbyterian in the Big South matchup on Friday. However, the Blue Hose regrouped to clinch the final four matches, ultimately winning the dual 5-2.
After Presbyterian (5-14, 1-1 Big South) secured the doubles point, last week’s Big South Freshman of the Week, Alexandra Magia, showcased her talent by defeating Elle Sceney 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, leveling the match. Following that, Elizaveta Gnilozubova clinched victory at No. 6 with a score of 6-3, 7-5 against Mary Ellen Longmire.
The momentum shifted again when Madison Dennett triumphed over Phoebe Mitchell, 6-4, 6-3 on court four, bringing the score to 2-2. Claudia Sanchez then claimed victory against Feline van Eijkelenburg with a 7-5, 6-3 score, putting Presbyterian ahead.
McKenzie Davis sealed the win for the Blue Hose with her 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory over Karina Rizvanova. Valentina De Sousa finished the day strongly for Presbyterian with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win against Oriana Izarra.
The doubles competition saw Rizvanova and Gnilozubova defeat Sanchez and De Souza, 6-3, at No. 1, leveling the doubles scores to 1-1 after Dennett and Sceney’s 6-3 win over Mitchell and Izarra on court three. Presbyterian clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory from Davis and Longmire against Magia and van Eijkelenburg.
This loss leaves the Lancers with an overall record of 6-9 and a conference record of 0-4. They will be looking to rebound on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they host Charleston Southern.
