Webuild Group Expands Its Reach in Australia with New Women and Babies Hospital
The Webuild Group is enhancing its footprint in Australia by leveraging its international expertise in the healthcare sector. In a joint venture, the Group has emerged as the preferred candidate for the design and construction of the Women and Babies Hospital in Perth, Western Australia, and has signed a Letter of Intent to proceed into the final stages of negotiations. This ambitious project is valued at approximately AUD 1.8 billion (€1.1 billion), with Webuild holding a 70% stake and the Australian firm Roberts Co. owning the remaining 30%.
A State-of-the-Art Facility for Women and Families
Commissioned by the Western Australian Government, this landmark initiative aims to replace the historic King Edward Memorial Hospital, a facility in operation for over a hundred years, and to expand healthcare services and options for women, newborns, and families in the region.
Strategically located within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct in Murdoch’s southern suburbs, the Women and Babies Hospital will contribute to broader healthcare improvements, including a substantial expansion of Osborne Park Hospital in Stirling and enhancements to neonatal services at Perth’s Children’s Hospital. The construction phase of this project is expected to generate over 1,400 jobs, prioritizing opportunities for Aboriginal and female workers.
Expertise in Healthcare Construction
Webuild brings a wealth of global experience to this project, having designed and constructed around 200 healthcare facilities worldwide. Among these are some of the most innovative centers in healthcare construction, such as the New Hospital in Venice Mestre—recognized as one of Europe’s most exquisite hospitals—and the Four Hospitals in Tuscany.
Strengthening Presence in Australia
With the establishment of the Women and Babies Hospital in Perth, Webuild, alongside its Australian subsidiary Clough, is solidifying its status in Australia, which ranks as the Group’s second-largest market after its home country. Recently, Webuild secured a AUD 1.7 billion contract for the Tunnels North section of the Suburban Rail Loop East in Melbourne, a new metro line aimed at bolstering the city’s sustainable mobility system.
Ongoing and Future Projects
In Perth, the Group has successfully completed the Airport Line, an 8.5-kilometre rail connection between the city center and its eastern suburbs. Additionally, Webuild is actively engaged in optimizing the sludge management process at Western Australia’s largest wastewater treatment plant. In the northern Pilbara region, the Group is constructing one of the world’s largest urea plants for fertilizer, accompanied by the Dampier Bulk Handling Facility to enhance port capabilities.
Webuild is also entrusted with the construction of tunnels for Melbourne’s Northeast Link, a pivotal component of the city’s motorway network, and is participating in the development of the Sydney Metro, connecting the city to the Western Sydney International Airport. This project represents the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in New South Wales. Furthermore, Webuild and Clough are collaborating on Snowy 2.0, the largest renewable energy project currently under construction in Australia.
