An Initiative to Elevate Women’s Sports
In an effort to advance women’s sports, RAJ Sports and Nike recently hosted The Epicenter: Women’s Global Sports Summit in Portland. This event attracted influential leaders and stakeholders from around the globe, highlighting the crucial role of community support in fostering women’s athletics.
Historic Developments for Portland Teams
Among the key topics discussed was the future of the Portland Thorns and Portland Fire. Both teams are set to make history with the opening of their new $150 million dual training facility, scheduled for completion in 2026. This initiative underlines the significance of Portland as a central hub for women’s sports.
Community Commitment
Lisa Bhathal Merage, co-founder of RAJ Sports, emphasized the decision to build in Portland, stating, “It just shows that this investment is about Portland, it’s about the community, it’s about everybody leaning in.” She further noted Portland’s longstanding history in women’s sports, dating back to the first LPGA tournament in the 1970s.
The Role of Fan Engagement
Strong fan support for both the NWSL and WNBA franchises remains essential for maintaining momentum. WNBA Hall of Famer Sylvia Fowles encouraged local supporters, saying, “Just support as much as you can. There’ll be a lot of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, just make sure you keep the Portland Fire at your heart and this team will be successful.”
A Message from a Coaching Legend
Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Dawn Staley provided guidance to the Fire’s ownership, urging them to prioritize fan feedback: “I hope that the owners really give the fans what they want. Like—hear them out. They are the consumers. They are the people that’s gonna buy season tickets.” Staley highlighted the importance of making fans feel included in the team’s journey.
Looking Ahead
Elliott Hill, CEO of Nike, remarked on the current momentum across women’s sports, stating, “What feels different today is that we have momentum across sports, across multiple athletes that are helping to build that momentum.” This collective push aims to enhance the visibility and viability of women’s sports on both local and global stages.
