An urgent alert has been raised after a man posing as a police officer successfully convinced an elderly woman to transfer a significant sum of money.
How the Scam Unfolded
According to Wiltshire Police, the fraudster contacted the woman, claiming that authorities were investigating unauthorized withdrawals from her bank account.
Financial Loss and Deceit
Under the guise of ensuring her safety, the woman was persuaded to withdraw cash and subsequently hand it over to a male individual who came to her residence in Melksham.
Understanding Courier Fraud
This scam is often referred to as “courier fraud.” Detective Constable Rachel Davies emphasized, “We will never ask a courier to visit your home to collect cash, bank cards, PIN numbers, or any other valuable items.”
