Point Park University Welcomes Women’s Flag Football Team
Point Park University has officially announced the addition of its 20th sports team—a women’s flag football team, which will enhance the university’s athletic offerings.
Strategic Growth in Athletics
As part of its broader vision to evolve into one of America’s most dynamic urban universities, Point Park is committed to seizing new opportunities for its students. “As part of our strategy for growth and to fulfill our vision of becoming one of the most dynamic urban universities in America, we must be nimble and proactive to opportunities for both our students and the university,” stated Dr. Chris W. Brussalis, President of Point Park University.
Recruitment and Season Plans
The university has embarked on hiring its first head coach for the new team, with plans to recruit players during the 2025-26 academic year. Additionally, a competitive schedule for the 2026-27 season is currently in development, with the team’s games slated to take place in the spring semester.
Rising Popularity of Women’s Flag Football
Women’s flag football is gaining traction across the nation, with approximately 65 NCAA institutions currently sponsoring teams. This surge in interest is especially evident in Pennsylvania, where high school programs are flourishing, supported by organizations such as the NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers. “With the growth of women’s flag football in Pennsylvania high schools and the support for the sport by the NFL and Pittsburgh Steelers, this is the ideal time to add this sport,” remarked Scott Swain, Vice President of Athletics.
Flag Football’s Expanding Reach
According to the International Federation of American Football, an impressive 2.4 million children under the age of 17 are now participating in organized flag football, further indicating the sport’s widespread appeal.
Point Park University is excited about this development, which not only aligns with the growing trend of women’s sports but also enriches the athletic experience available to its students.
