Dr. Sonja Lee: A Legacy of Compassionate Care in Veterinary Medicine
Lubbock, Texas – After nearly 60 years of dedicated service, Dr. Sonja Lee, a revered veterinarian in the Lubbock community, is set to retire. Her journey into veterinary medicine has not only been remarkable but also trailblazing, especially for women in the profession.
Early Inspiration and Education
Dr. Lee’s passion for animals began in her childhood. A pivotal moment occurred when she was just 11 years old. Following an incident where a neighbor’s dog injured a duck, she and her father creatively used duct tape and popsicle sticks to aid the injured animal. Inspired by this experience, her father encouraged her to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
However, the path was not straightforward. In fourth grade, Dr. Lee faced gender discrimination when she was told she couldn’t join 4-H because she was a girl. This motivated her further to challenge societal norms. In 1963, she applied to Texas A&M University — a notable milestone as it was one of the first military institutions to accept women into its veterinary program.
“I’m just glad I was born in the right year,” she remarked, reflecting on her timely admission.
Pioneering the Way for Women in Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Lee became the first woman to graduate from Texas A&M’s veterinary program in 1966. However, her journey was met with opposition. She received letters expressing discontent over her acceptance, including threats and being the subject of radio talk shows. Yet, Dr. Lee maintained her determination, representing a significant shift in the veterinary landscape.
“I sincerely hope some young man is not being deprived of entering this fall because the college had to get a girl in by then,” she recalls reading from one of the letters.
Today, women represent approximately 75% of the student body in veterinary schools across the nation, a change Dr. Lee welcomes. “I’m glad…that it’s easier for women to get in now,” she noted.
Establishing Ark Hospital for Pets
In 1976, Dr. Lee founded the Ark Hospital for Pets in Lubbock, after initially running a small animal clinic from her home. Over the subsequent decades, she has adapted her practice to incorporate advancements in technology and medicine while remaining committed to her original passion for animal care.
“I remember the dog’s name, but not the person,” she humorously admitted, emphasizing her deep connection with her four-legged patients.
A Lasting Impact and Retirement Celebration
As Dr. Lee prepares to conclude her longstanding career at the age of 83, she reflects on the thousands of pets she has assisted, often finding homes for strays in need. “We don’t turn down strays and things like that,” she stated, showcasing her commitment to animal welfare.
Her professional partner, Dr. John Smith Jr., who is also retiring, praised her dedication and impact on the community. “She was a dynamo when she was feeling good… I know clients really love her,” he expressed.
A retirement celebration for Dr. Lee and Dr. Smith will take place on Friday, August 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ark Hospital, inviting the Lubbock community to honor their contributions.
