The Rise of Women’s Sports in Philadelphia: A Look at the Upcoming Women’s Sports Bar
Creating a Community for Women’s Sports Fans
Philadelphia, known for its fervent sports culture, has recognized a gap in support for women’s athletics. To address this, local initiatives are emerging. Notably, the city is among the contenders for the WNBA’s 16th franchise, expected to launch between 2027 and 2028. Additionally, organizations like the United Soccer League and Women’s Professional Baseball League are exploring expansions, positioning Philadelphia as a potential hub for women’s sports.
One answer to fostering this support is Watch Party PHL. This organization, founded to promote gatherings for women’s sports enthusiasts, aims to replicate the enthusiasm typically reserved for Philadelphia’s men’s teams.

The First Women’s Sports Bar in Philadelphia
In a significant step for local sports culture, a new women’s sports bar is slated to open in Philadelphia by summer 2026. Initiated by Jen Leary, a local firefighter with a history of community service through the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, the bar aims to create a welcoming atmosphere where fans can unite over women’s sports.
“Those of us who are very passionate about women’s sports want to cheer for our own, and Philly wants to cheer for their own,” Leary stated. The proposed establishment will not only serve food and beverages but will also educate patrons on female athletes and the history of women’s sports.
Building a Strong Foundation
Watch Party PHL, co-founded by Leary and her collaborators Lori Albright, Fawn McGee, and Megan DiTolla, is moving to establish a permanent venue for its events, celebrating the one-year anniversary of hosting watch parties. The goal is to mimic the electric atmosphere of larger events, like Eagles games, while focusing on women’s sports.
“The first women’s sports bar in the country was The Sports Bra in Portland,” Leary explained. “There are close to 30 bars either in development or recently opened across the U.S., indicating a growing trend.” With Philadelphia next in line, the group is actively seeking funding and the ideal location for this new venture.
Designing an Inclusive Space
The planned bar will be situated in the Midtown Village/Bella Vista area and will feature a unique design that highlights significant figures in women’s sports history, from the Dolly Vardens, one of the first women’s sports teams, to contemporary stars like Kahleah Copper and Natasha Cloud. Leary envisions a bright, welcoming space that transitions from a coffee shop during the day to a vibrant bar in the evenings, showing women’s sports events from various leagues, including international competitions.
Funding Efforts and Future Vision
To bring this vision to reality, a Kickstarter campaign is currently in progress, aiming to raise $40,000 by July 8. As of now, they have raised around $30,000. Early backers will receive themed merchandise and opportunities for recognition within the future bar’s interior.
Leary expressed hope for a broader acceptance of women’s sports in Philadelphia, emphasizing the importance of local athletes in fostering community spirit. “We want this upcoming space to feel welcoming for everyone who loves Philly and women’s sports,” she concluded, looking forward to the day when a local team could join the roster.
