Patri Guijarro: The Unsung Hero of Women’s Football
Recognizing Contributions on and off the Pitch
Patri Guijarro, a key player in women’s football, recently expressed her gratitude for being regarded as an “unsung hero.” She stated, “I am very flattered. I’ve always said that I feel very valued by players, by staff. And for me that’s the ultimate.” Guijarro emphasizes the importance of being appreciated within her team, stating that such recognition fuels her ambition to contribute positively to the sport.
A Passion for Football From a Young Age
Guijarro’s journey into football began at the tender age of seven when she started competing in league matches. Her love for the game was nurtured through countless hours spent playing with family, particularly her father and uncle. “Since I was a little girl I have always liked to be with the ball,” she recalls, highlighting her lifelong dedication to the sport.
Her Tenure at FC Barcelona
Having been with FC Barcelona for a decade, Guijarro reflects on her transformative experiences with the team. “These last few years have been incredible, especially in terms of results, how we are evolving and how we are achieving the objectives we want.” She also expressed satisfaction with her contributions, stating her happiness in playing for both her club and the national team.
International Aspirations
Playing for the national team has always been a goal for Guijarro. “That is what I’ve always wanted – to play for the national team; defend this jersey, your home,” she remarked. This ambition underscores her commitment to pursuing excellence within the sport.
A Strong Voice in the Women’s Game
Maria Teixidor, a former director of Barcelona and co-founder of Spain’s players’ union FutPro, praised Guijarro as a “silent force.” Teixidor emphasized that “there are people that don’t need to speak loudly to make themselves present,” noting Guijarro’s loyalty, values, and purposeful approach both on and off the pitch.
