Notably, during a banking crisis in the early 1980s, she was appointed as the staff director for the Senate Commerce Committee, a position held for 12 years, during which she was one of the few minorities in such a role.

One of Ms. Fort’s hallmark achievements includes her pivotal role in drafting landmark legislation in the early 1990s that positioned Florida as the first state to take legal action against Big Tobacco. This legislative effort led to a groundbreaking $17 billion settlement, marking a significant shift in public health policy and providing annual funds for Medicaid programs in Florida.

Ms. Fort holds a Juris Doctor from the Florida State University College of Law, obtained in 1977, coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government from the same institution in 1975.
