Oman Reaffirms Commitment to Women’s Empowerment at CSW69
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has reiterated its dedication to enhancing the roles of women in the fields of science, technology, and human rights during the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York, taking place from March 10 to March 21, 2025.
Empowering Women in Science and Technology
Leading the Omani delegation, Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, the Minister of Social Development, emphasized the country’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for scientific innovation among Omani women. “Oman is dedicated to creating an appealing ecosystem for women’s advancements in science and technology, thereby reinforcing their status and enabling them to reach significant milestones both regionally and internationally,” she stated.
During the side event titled “Women and Technology: Inspiring Stories in the GCC Countries,” Dr. Al Najjar highlighted the nation’s initiatives to enhance educational and vocational infrastructures, aligning them with the demands of the labor market.
Investment in Modern Facilities
She pointed out that Oman has established cutting-edge facilities, including digital laboratories, to meet technological demands and ensure that women are well-prepared for careers in emerging scientific sectors. Notably, she reported an increase in female enrollment rates in science and technology disciplines for the academic year 2024/2025 as evidence of these positive strides.
Participation in High-Level Dialogues
Oman’s involvement at CSW69 was further highlighted through a high-level interactive dialogue with regional committees, during which Dr. Al Najjar delivered a speech addressing the “Muscat Declaration on Progress in Implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in the Arab Region after Thirty Years.”
She emphasized that the “Beijing Declaration” provides strategic pathways essential for fortifying women’s rights and enhancing their empowerment globally.
Advocacy for Global Human Rights
On the international platform, Dr. Al Najjar strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression in the occupied Palestinian territories, denouncing severe violations of international law, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
She highlighted the imperative need for adherence to international resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the unlawful status of the occupation.
Additionally, she expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, particularly the increasing violence against women and girls. Dr. Al Najjar underscored that regional conflicts and crises lead to forced displacement, deprivation of essential services, and heightened insecurity, with women disproportionately affected.
Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
Oman’s participation in CSW69 underscores its steadfast commitment to advocating for women’s empowerment both within the Sultanate and on a global scale, ensuring that women’s issues remain at the forefront of international discussions.
