Omaha Mavericks Shine at Augustana Invitational

The Omaha Mavericks women’s tennis team launched their fall season successfully at the Augustana Invitational held in Sioux Falls. The event marked a promising start, showcasing strong performances from both returning and new team members.

Individual Achievements

Sophomore Nina Wiese and freshman Grace Greenwald each captured singles titles in their respective flights. Wiese not only triumphed in singles but also claimed victory in doubles alongside her partner, sophomore Katelynn Kock.

Flight A Success for Wiese

In the Flight A finals, Wiese faced Creighton’s Sophie Schwartz, winning decisively with scores of 6-1, 6-3. This victory extended Wiese’s winning streak to an impressive 15 matches, dating back to the previous spring season.

Greenwald’s Flight F Championship

Freshman Greenwald achieved her title by competing against Jasmine Ben Aba from Nebraska-Kearney in the Flight F finals. Greenwald secured a 5-2 victory after Ben Aba had to withdraw due to injury.

Doubles Victory

The doubles team of Wiese and Kock also found success, winning the Flight A doubles championship. The duo secured their title by defeating Creighton’s pairing of Schwartz and Teresa Tran with a score of 8-6.

Coaching Insights

Head coach Adam Summitt shared his thoughts on the team’s performance during the tournament. “Really solid first weekend out of the team,” Summitt stated. “You never know what to expect going into the first one, but we competed well. Nina and Grace played great to win their respective flights. I felt a lot of us had jitters but eased up as the tournament went on. This was a great first step for us and something to build on for the future,” he added.

Upcoming Events

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will host a home meet at the Omaha/Creighton Invite, scheduled for September 26-27 at the Koch Tennis Center. This event promises to be another opportunity for the team to showcase their talents and build on their recent successes.
