On Sunday, Jamie Carey was announced as the head coach of the Omaha women’s basketball program, bringing with her a wealth of experience from both playing and coaching at high levels of athletics.
Coaching Journey
Before joining Omaha, Carey served as the associate head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for the past four seasons. Additionally, she has held assistant coaching roles at notable programs including her alma mater, the University of Texas (2017-2020), as well as at the University of Colorado (2015-2017) and the University of North Texas (2020-2021).
A Stellar Playing Career
Carey’s notable career includes her time as a guard for the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA from 2005 to 2008. She was also a member of Team USA, contributing to the team’s success with a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games. Her dedication to the sport continued as she served as the assistant women’s national team director for USA Basketball between 2010 and 2014. Throughout her playing career at Texas, she earned the distinction of being named All-Big 12 on two occasions.
Vision for the Future
“We are proud to welcome Jamie Carey as the new leader of our women’s basketball program,” said Adrian Dowell, the athletic director at Omaha. “Coach Carey brings us a wealth of experience at the highest level of collegiate athletics both as a coach and student-athlete, coupled with her playing career in the WNBA. Throughout her coaching career and during the interview process, Coach Carey has successfully demonstrated a passion towards holistically developing student-athletes while pursuing competitive success. We are excited for this program’s future under her leadership.”
Recent Program Performance
Omaha’s women’s basketball team wrapped up the previous season with a record of 14 wins and 17 losses, including 5 wins against 11 losses in the Summit League. Following the season, the program parted ways with former coach Carrie Banks after her five-year tenure. The Mavericks have struggled to achieve a winning record since the 2016-2017 season, when they finished with 16 wins and 15 losses.
With Carey at the helm, fans and stakeholders are keenly anticipating a resurgence in the program’s competitive standing.
