Omaha, Nebraska – The University of Nebraska Omaha has announced the appointment of Jamie Carey as its new head coach for the women’s basketball team. Athletic Director Adrian Dowell revealed this change on Sunday. Carey, who previously served as the associate head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), brings a wealth of coaching experience to Omaha.
At 44 years old, Carey steps in to lead the team following the dismissal of Carrie Banks. Banks led the Mavericks during five consecutive losing seasons, with the last winning record for the Omaha program dating back to the 2016-2017 season.
During her tenure at UTSA, Carey played a key role in the program’s success. Under the guidance of head coach Karen Aston, the Roadrunners captured their first American Athletic Conference regular-season title and achieved an impressive 26-5 record during the last season. They also participated in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in 2024 and the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) in 2025.
Carey’s extensive coaching background includes stints at various institutions, such as a year at North Texas, four years with Texas, and two years at Colorado. Moreover, she contributed to the development of players at the national level as the assistant women’s national team director for USA Basketball from 2010 to 2014.
Before entering coaching, Carey was a notable player, having represented both Stanford and Texas during her collegiate career from 2000 to 2005. She continued her basketball journey professionally in the WNBA, playing four seasons with the Connecticut Sun.
With Carey’s proven track record and experience both as a player and coach, UNO aims for a revitalization of its women’s basketball program.
