Ole Miss Women’s Tennis Set for NCAA National Tournament
OXFORD, Miss. — The Ole Miss women’s tennis team is gearing up for their 22nd appearance in the NCAA National Tournament, taking place this week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Rebels will face off against Arizona State in the first round of the regional tournament.
Returning to the National Stage
This marks Ole Miss’s first return to the national tournament since the 2021 season. The Rebels, currently ranked No. 17 nationally, are looking to make their mark in this year’s competition.
Coach Mark Beyers’ Farewell Season
Under the leadership of Head Coach Mark Beyers, who will retire after this season, the Rebels have previously sent 14 teams to the NCAA tournament. Beyers has been instrumental in the program’s success, which includes nine Sweet 16 appearances and four Elite Eight finishes since 1991.
One of the highlights of Beyers’ tenure came in 2010 when his team achieved a 4-0 shutout against Georgia Tech, securing their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1999. The 2024 Rebels enter the tournament with a 15-12 overall record.
Recent History of Success
Between 2011 and 2018, the Rebels reached the NCAA tournament seven times, with six teams advancing to the second round. A significant milestone occurred in 2018, when Arianne Hartono won the singles title at the Individual Tournament, showcasing the strength of the program.
Seeking a New Era
After the disruptions caused by the global pandemic, the Rebels are eager to make a strong comeback. In 2021, Ole Miss finished with an 11-9 overall record and a 7-6 conference play tally, being one of the 13 SEC women’s tennis programs to qualify for the national championships.
This season, all nine members of the team will be competing in the NCAA Championship for the first time in their careers, showcasing a blend of fresh talent ready to rise to the challenge.
