Northern Michigan University Swimming and Diving Teams Excel in Season Opener

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University (NMU) Wildcats showcased remarkable skill during their opening weekend of the swimming and diving season held on October 3 and 4 at the PEIF pool. Competing against teams from Lake Superior State, Davenport, and St. Cloud State of Minnesota, both the men’s and women’s teams demonstrated dominant performances.
Women’s Team Highlights
The NMU women’s team opened the competition by winning every event on the first day, accumulating a total of 27 podium finishes from 39 possible places. They continued their success on day two, again winning all eight events and securing 20 of the 24 podium positions available.
Notable Performances
- Evie DeCarlo100-yard breaststroke and three relays.
- Carlotta Santi: Santi claimed wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle and participated in two relay victories.
- Sophia Moore: Moore contributed by winning the 100 butterfly and securing second place in the 200 butterfly.
- Kalina Ceglinski: Ceglinski dominated the diving division, winning both the one- and three-meter events.
- Freshmen Highlights: Grace Daly and Emma Casas also performed well, with Daly finishing second in the one-meter dive and Casas winning the 100 backstroke.
Men’s Team Highlights
The Northern Michigan men’s team also had a highly successful showing, winning 11 out of 13 events during the first day and taking home 22 podium finishes. On day two, they followed up with six wins in eight events.
Key Achievements
- Jef Leroux: Leroux brought home four individual wins, including in the 200 freestyle.
- Will LaCount: LaCount secured podium finishes in four events, winning the 50 freestyle and contributing to two relay victories.
- Tobie Stiles: Stiles excelled in diving, claiming victory in both the one- and three-meter events.
- Freshman Timothee Garin-Coupillaud: Garin won the 500 freestyle by an impressive margin.
Upcoming Schedule
The Wildcats will have a brief hiatus before competing again on October 24 against the University Center and Saginaw Valley State, followed by a match against Grand Valley State in Allendale on October 25.
This thrilling opening weekend sets a promising tone for both teams as they pursue a successful season ahead.
