Advocating for Increased Women’s Political Participation in Benue, Nigeria
Member Adiguve, the coordinator of the Young Women in Politics Forum in Benue, highlighted the need for greater engagement of women in political roles beyond traditional leadership positions. Speaking in Makurdi, she urged women to strive for leadership across all levels of government and within political parties.
Empowering Women Through Education
Ms. Adiguve noted that the forum is actively working to educate women about the importance of participating in politics. This initiative includes extensive public enlightenment campaigns across the 23 local councils in Benue State.
Focus on Affirmative Action
The coordinator emphasized the forum’s commitment to advocating for the full implementation of the 35 percent affirmative action for women in state governance. She asserted that they are closely monitoring a bill currently under review by the National Assembly, which proposes reserved seats for women in elective positions. “Once this bill is passed and enacted, we will advocate for its implementation at the state level,” stated Ms. Adiguve.
The Role of Media in Advocacy
Elizabeth Achagh, chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists in Benue, joined the conversation by stressing the crucial role of women in national development. She pointed out that women’s perspectives are invaluable to addressing developmental challenges.
Ms. Achagh stated, “Over the years, women have proven their worth when given the opportunity to serve the nation, with inspiring examples including the late Dr. Dora Akunyili, Oby Ezekwesili, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.” She highlighted the qualities that women bring to nation-building—hard work, resourcefulness, resilience, and commitment.
Call for Legislative Changes
According to Ms. Achagh, the representation of women in Nigeria’s political landscape has diminished, which is concerning for a nation that considers itself a leader in Africa. She advocates for the ‘Her-seat in Parliament’ bill, which aims to create a more equitable society by ensuring women’s representation in decision-making processes.
“This bill is strategic in ensuring an equitable, just, and fair inclusive society, where women would have a seat at the decision-making table,” she added.
