Governor Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash Over Comments on Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged as a significant figure in the ongoing debate about the participation of transgender women in women’s sports, drawing intense responses from LGBT advocates and fellow Democrats alike. His recent comments during the inaugural episode of his podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom,” ignited discussion on this contentious topic.
While speaking with prominent conservative commentator Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA, the conversation pivoted towards the implications of the Democratic Party’s stance on transgender athletes in the aftermath of their loss in the 2024 presidential election. Kirk suggested that Newsom, perceived as a potential candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, could appeal to moderate voters by opposing the inclusion of trans-identified males in female sports.

Executive Director Tony Hoang emphasized that “transgender kids deserve the chance to play sports alongside their teammates” and should be treated with dignity and respect.
In response to Newsom’s comments, openly gay Democratic state senator Scott Wiener criticized the governor, labeling the conversation as “profoundly disturbing” and calling for Democrats to stand firmly in support of transgender rights.
