Rice Women’s Basketball Ready for 2025 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout

The Rice University women’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2025 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout, which will take place over the Thanksgiving period in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Scheduled for November 26-28, the tournament will feature the Owls competing in three games against diverse opponents.

Game Schedule and Opponents

Throughout the event, the Owls will compete against:

  • UCF
  • Illinois State
  • Morgan State

All games will be hosted at Coliseo Guillermo Angulo, a premier venue in San Juan.

Head Coach Perspective

Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds expressed her enthusiasm: “I am excited for our team to participate in the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout this year. This will be a great opportunity to test our team early in the season and compete against a diverse field of schools. Opportunities like this continue to show how elite the Rice student-athlete experience truly is and I cannot wait to watch our team compete.”

Recent Performance and Context

This year marks the second consecutive season that the Rice Owls will participate in a Multi-Team Event (MTE), following their involvement in the Cancun Challenge last year, where they faced off against BYU and Vermont. In the previous season, Rice concluded with a record of 17-17, securing back-to-back appearances in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship game.

Insight on Opponents

Here’s a brief overview of Rice’s competition:

  • Illinois State: The Redbirds had an impressive 2024-25 season, finishing with a 24-13 record, and reached the Fab Four of the WNIT.
  • Morgan State: The Bears concluded their last season with a 13-17 record in the MEAC.
  • UCF: The Knights are entering their third season in the Big XII and finished last season with a 12-18 record.

Returning Players

This season, Rice will see the return of key players including:

  • Dominique Ennis, an All-AAC Second Team selection
  • Victoria Flores, recognized on the All-Newcomer Team
  • Aniah Alexis, an All-Freshman Team honoree

Upcoming Details

The specific dates and times for the three matchups are yet to be announced. Ticket information will also be made available in the near future.
