Announcement of Appointment
New Mexico State University is set to welcome Joe Fields as its new athletic director, effective October 8, 2023. This decision follows an extensive search process, concluding with the replacement of Mario Moccia, who was dismissed earlier this year amidst scrutiny over issues related to a sexual abuse investigation within the department.
Background on Joe Fields
Joe Fields has garnered substantial experience in athletic administration, most recently serving as the deputy athletic director and chief operating officer at the University of Tulsa since 2024. Prior to his tenure at Tulsa, Fields built a solid career at Texas A&M University, where he progressed from associate athletics director for academic services to deputy athletic director.
Fields’ athletic journey began as a football player at Syracuse University. His career also included a brief stint in professional football with the Carolina Panthers in the NFL.
Insights from NMSU Officials
Justin Bannister, chief of staff at NMSU and chair of the search committee for the athletic director position, expressed confidence in Fields’ ability to lead the department. “Aggie fans are going to love what Joe brings to the table,” Bannister stated. He emphasized that Fields’ dual perspective as a former student-athlete and as an administrator positions him uniquely to understand the complete landscape of college athletics.
