Empowering Women: Financially Included’s Fight Against Economic Abuse
Understanding Economic Abuse
Economic abuse is recognized as a form of coercive control and is classified as a criminal offense under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018. It encompasses practices that restrict individuals’ access to financial resources, undermining their ability to be financially independent.
This type of abuse extends beyond mere financial control; it can impact access to work, education, and essential services, creating significant barriers for victims trying to regain their autonomy.
The Role of Financially Included
Financially Included is dedicated to supporting women in Glasgow who have faced economic abuse as a result of gender-based violence. Their specialized money and debt advice services empower women to rebuild their lives after experiences of domestic abuse.
Since their launch, Financially Included has provided vital support to over 630 women and 1100 children, showcasing their commitment to this critical issue.
The Purple Phone: Scotland’s Economic Abuse Helpline
In September, Financially Included rolled out The Purple Phone, a helpline designed to provide essential support for economic abuse victims. Currently operating in Glasgow, with East Renfrewshire set to join in December, plans for broader reach across Scotland are underway.
Women can reach out by calling 0343 841 0132 for expert advice and resources tailored to their needs.
Real Stories of Support
Consider the case of Catherine*, a woman who had to escape from an abusive partner, along with her nine-year-old son. While previously employed, her situation led to her being unable to work. Upon contacting The Purple Phone, Catherine was provided with comprehensive support tailored to her unique circumstances.
From advice on benefits to assistance with applications for various forms of financial support, Catherine benefitted from guidance that helped alleviate her immediate financial anxieties. An advisor helped her apply for crisis grants, ensuring she had some income while waiting for further benefits to kick in.
“Having only dealt with one advisor meant I didn’t have to relive my trauma by recounting my story repeatedly,” Catherine said.
This continuous support laid a solid foundation for her recovery, allowing Catherine to focus on rebuilding her life.
Available Resources for Women
Financially Included recognizes that leaving an abusive situation is often fraught with challenges. Many women may not feel ready to leave, and the economic repercussions of gender-based violence can linger long after the relationship has ended.
The Purple Phone serves as an invaluable resource at any stage of recovery, offering a listening ear and practical advice for victims navigating their financial hardships.
