New Grants Program to Enhance Understanding of Women’s Health Issues
The state has unveiled an innovative grants program dedicated to improving knowledge about how diseases and health concerns uniquely affect women.
Introduction of Women’s Health Research Catalyst Grants
This initiative will provide $1.5 million in funding through the Women’s Health Research Catalyst Grants, inviting leading researchers in the field to submit their applications.
Funding Details
Grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 will support one-year research projects that specifically examine sex and gender comparisons, as well as conditions that are often overlooked in women’s health.
Focus Areas for Research
Although all aspects of health and medical research are eligible for consideration, several target areas have been pinpointed as particularly needing deeper exploration of sex and gender effects. It is essential to recognize that women can experience health conditions quite differently than men.
These critical focus areas include but are not limited to:
- Sexual and reproductive health
- Cardiovascular health
- Oncology
- Orthopaedics
- Chronic pain
Comments from Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas
Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas emphasized that many conditions unique to women or those affecting them disproportionately “have not received the necessary funding or attention.” She continued, stating, “For far too long, medical misogyny has deemed women unreliable subjects for research due to hormone fluctuations, but this should not lead to their exclusion. Instead, these biological differences should drive our focus.”
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the grants, applicants must be affiliated with a Victorian Administering Institution and engaged in research within the health and medical fields, including discovery, pre-clinical, clinical, or lived experience accounts.
Application Timeline
The application window for the Women’s Health Research Catalyst Grants opens on Monday, January 13. Interested researchers should prepare to submit their project proposals.
