The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) has made a significant announcement regarding the future of women’s football in England. Starting from the 2025-26 season, the Women’s Championship will be officially rebranded as the WSL 2, aligning it under a unified branding known as Women’s Super League Football. This strategic move aims to consolidate the league names and enhance recognition across the board.
Accompanying this change is the formation of a new independent entity named WSL Football, which will oversee both the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship. This rebranding effort signifies a formal transition intended to elevate the profile of women’s football within the sport.
Ruth Hooper, Chief Marketing Officer of WSL Football, expressed enthusiasm about the rebranding process: “Developing this new visual world with Anomaly has been a real labour of love. No one plays football like a female—it is our strength, and the way players move is one element of what makes women’s football distinctive and special. As soon as this concept was brought to the table, we knew it was the right route, and we embraced it. It has taken months of work, and we have spoken to clubs, fans, players, and partners who have all inputted during the process and been on this journey with us.”
Hooper further added, “There is a lot more in store over the coming months as we continue to grow the women’s game for the future.”
The Women’s Championship was initially launched under the name WSL 2 in 2014 but underwent a rebranding to its current title before the 2018-19 season. This latest change marks a return to its earlier name, reflecting a renewed focus on the expansion and promotion of women’s football.
