2028 Women’s Final Four Relocates to Lucas Oil Stadium

Indianapolis will host the 2028 NCAA Women’s Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium, a venue change aimed at accommodating the growing fan interest and increasing ticket demand for the event. The decision was made by the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee, which emphasized the significant progress women’s basketball has made in recent years.

Venue Change Reflects Growth in Women’s Basketball

Amanda Braun, chair of the committee and director of athletics at Milwaukee, stated, “Moving the 2028 Women’s Final Four to Lucas Oil Stadium will allow for more access for our fans, and it represents the continued growth of the sport.” This transition will add approximately 13,000 additional seats compared to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, reflecting the sport’s rising popularity.

Supporting Events and Championships

The weekend of the Women’s Final Four will also feature the Division II and III championships, creating a broader experience for attendees.

Impact on Local Sports Scene

Patrick Talty, president of Indiana Sports Corp., expressed excitement about the move, noting that it marks the return of the Women’s Final Four to an active NFL stadium for the first time in over two decades. “This stage not only elevates the experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans but also reflects the remarkable growth and momentum of women’s basketball,” he said. Talty further emphasized that hosting such a significant event helps reinforce Indiana’s aspiration to be recognized as the women’s sports capital of the world.

Continuation of Preliminary-Round Format

In addition to the venue change, the committee voted to maintain the current preliminary-round format through the 2031 championship. According to a survey of Division I members, 85% supported retaining this format. The structure, which features the First Four games and initial rounds at 16 campus sites, has proven successful, as the last three tournaments recorded the highest attendance figures for first and second rounds in history.

Conclusion

This strategic shift to Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2028 Women’s Final Four aims not only to enhance the spectator experience but also signifies a crucial moment in the advancement of women’s sports. As attendance continues to rise, the NCAA is committed to fostering an environment that supports this growth.
