Barriers for Women in Politics
The fear of public scrutiny and its potential impact on their children is a significant deterrent for women considering a run for office on the Isle of Man. This insight comes from the ongoing research conducted as part of the ‘Women in Manx Politics’ study, aimed at understanding the low representation of women in Tynwald.
Research Insights
Academics Professor Peter Edge and Dr. Catriona Mackie have investigated the reasons why women may hesitate more than men to enter the political arena.
Upcoming Event: Encouraging Female Candidates
To address these concerns, Dr. Mackie and Professor Edge will be hosting a discussion titled ‘Should I Stand for the House of Keys’ at the Nunnery on Wednesday, 2 April, from 6.30 PM to 8 PM. This event is part of a broader initiative aimed at empowering women in Manx politics, supported by Culture Vannin.
The session will provide valuable insights for potential candidates, covering essential considerations before deciding to run for election. This initiative underscores an important movement towards increasing women’s representation in political offices.
Dr. Mackie and Professor Edge will share their findings and engage in dialogue with attendees to inspire and support women who wish to enter politics on the Isle of Man.
