The Michigan State University women’s basketball program has made its first significant move in the 2025 transfer portal by acquiring sophomore guard Rashunda Jones from conference rivals, the Purdue Boilermakers. Jones confirmed her commitment to join head coach Robyn Fralick’s lineup through a social media announcement on Sunday.
Popularly known as “Spider” Jones, the 5’8” guard demonstrated considerable skill during her tenure at Purdue. In her sophomore season, she averaged 9.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, boasting an impressive 47% shooting percentage from the field. Her performance ranked her second in scoring on the Boilermakers’ roster and placed her at the top for assists.
This addition is particularly timely for the Spartans, who are set to lose key graduate guards Nyla Hampton and Jaddan Simmons after a strong season in 2024-25. Jones’s experience as a formidable competitor in the Big Ten will be invaluable for MSU as they look to bolster their guard line.
During her two years at Purdue, Jones faced the Spartans multiple times. Notably, in their second matchup on January 1, 2024, she managed to score nine points, contributing two steals and two rebounds in a season where she showed considerable growth.
In addition to Rashunda Jones’s signing, the Spartans are also expecting to welcome several high school recruits to the roster for the upcoming season, further enhancing the team’s prospects as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
