In an exciting development for Concord University’s women’s basketball program, head coach Tesla Southcott has officially announced the addition of Morgan Mitchell to her coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.
Previously, Mitchell served at the University of Dubuque, a Division III institution located in Dubuque, Iowa. She spent four seasons with the program where she made significant contributions, particularly in her last three years as a full-time assistant coach. Under her guidance, Dubuque achieved a commendable 54 wins since the start of the 2021-22 season and made it to the American Rivers Conference Semifinals in 2024, finishing with a record of 16-11.
Expressing her enthusiasm about joining Concord, Mitchell stated, “I am so excited to get started at Concord! Coach Tesla (Southcott) and the University have shown that they emphasize the players’ abilities on and off the court, and I am excited to be a part of the Concord family.”
During her tenure at Dubuque, Mitchell was instrumental in developing talent, notably coaching Tabria Thomas, who earned a spot on the all-conference first team three times. Additionally, her first season saw Karsen Kershner win recognition as the ARC Defensive Player of the Year, with a total of ten Spartans receiving All-ARC acclaim under her mentorship.
Coach Southcott praised Mitchell for her positive leadership qualities and expressed excitement about the energy and work ethic she brings to the team. “Morgan is a very positive leader, and I’m really excited for her energy and work ethic to mentor our girls on a daily basis,” Southcott remarked. She further highlighted Mitchell’s extensive experience and commitment, noting, “Her loyalty and commitment to her career are qualities that stood out in the interview process.” Additionally, Southcott emphasized that Mitchell’s diverse background in various roles—from reserve teams to game day management—makes her an ideal fit for Concord.
Mitchell, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, played college basketball for the Spartans, participating in 71 games. She experienced a modified season in 2020-21 due to the pandemic, which shortened the schedule to just 13 games. She is married to Kellen Mitchell, a former baseball player at Dubuque who was recognized as All-ARC twice during his collegiate career.
Looking ahead, Concord’s women’s basketball team will kick off the 2025-26 season at home from November 14-15, facing off against Seton Hill and Lock Haven. The full schedule for the season is expected to be released later this summer.
