The City of Mississauga enthusiastically takes part in the worldwide observance of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, honoring the significant social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women.
This year’s focus, #AccelerateAction, highlights the urgency to promote gender equality and empower women to excel across all areas of society.
Women represent around 43 percent of all roles within the City of Mississauga, with those in leadership positions accounting for 47 percent. Additionally, women are making their mark in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as Fire Services, Engineering, Construction, Security, Parks, Forestry, and IT. Mississauga boasts a rich legacy of female leadership, having had notable women serve as Councillors and Mayors, including Hazel McCallion (1978–2014), Bonnie Crombie (2014–2024), and Carolyn Parrish (since 2024).
The City is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment, championing women’s initiatives, and recognizing their invaluable contributions to the community. To commemorate this essential day, a dedicated webpage has been launched, featuring special events, programs, and resources designed to empower and celebrate women.
Residents are invited to engage in the City’s International Women’s Day activities and support local initiatives aimed at fostering gender equality.

Messages of Empowerment
“This International Women’s Day, we honor the remarkable women who shape Mississauga—leaders, educators, business owners, frontline workers, and community members who inspire change with courage, determination, and innovation. I take pride in the fact that women fill nearly half of our city’s leadership roles and that Mississauga has continuously advocated for female empowerment, with three consecutive women serving as mayor. This progress reflects what is achievable, but it also underscores the call to action—accelerating our efforts is this year’s theme. We must persist in dismantling barriers and fostering a future where every woman and girl can flourish without limitations.” – Mayor Carolyn Parrish
“As a female leader in our city, I am deeply proud to be part of a community where women’s empowerment is pivotal to our growth and success. Today, we celebrate the exceptional accomplishments of women and reaffirm our dedication to equality and empowerment. International Women’s Day transcends mere acknowledgment of progress; it is a commitment to creating more opportunities, amplifying voices, and inspiring future generations. Supporting and uplifting women strengthens our entire community.” – Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services
