Human remains believed to belong to a missing 18-year-old woman, Kylee Monteiro, have been discovered, leading to murder charges against her boyfriend, 22-year-old Gregory Groom. The Bristol County District Attorney’s office confirmed the findings on Tuesday evening.
Groom was apprehended earlier that day and faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and battery, domestic assault and battery, and intimidation of a witness, relating to incidents involving Monteiro. The young woman, who was three months pregnant at the time of her disappearance, had not been seen since August 7, and her last known location was Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
According to family members, Monteiro had a confrontation with Groom just before she went missing. They reported that she expressed concerns for her safety. Her sister, Faith Monteiro, revealed the challenges of contacting Groom during the search, stating, “I wasn’t able to get a hold of him for a little while – he was receiving a lot of threats and secluded himself.” Faith mentioned that the family had been actively searching for her sister and had maintained communication with Groom following the initial confusion.
Authorities indicated that Groom allegedly assaulted Monteiro the day prior to her disappearance. After gathering evidence, investigators resumed their search efforts at Groom’s residence on County Street. They utilized heavy equipment, and noises from digging were reported as evidence was being collected from the area. So far, police have not disclosed the specific information that led them back to Groom’s property or revealed the contents of the evidence bags.
A friend of Monteiro expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “She was so loving and caring, and I love her so much. Kylee will always be remembered and always be loved.”
Groom is currently being held without bail, with plans for him to be arraigned on Wednesday morning in Taunton District Court.
