The Journey of a Midwife: Andrea Engdahl’s Story
From Aspiration to Achievement
Andrea Engdahl’s journey into midwifery began 25 years ago. Pregnant with her first child and exploring healthcare options, she discovered the role of a nurse midwife, a specialty focusing on delivering babies and providing care to women throughout various stages of life.
A Journey of Education and Experience
After an 18-year period that included raising her children and working in early childhood education, Engdahl pursued her nursing degree. This educational path culminated in her graduation from midwifery school, enabling her to blend her experiences in obstetrics with her passion for women’s health.
Current Role and Responsibilities
Now at 49, Engdahl sees patients at M Health Fairview Clinic-Riverside and delivers babies at Masonic Children’s Hospital. Her daily responsibilities include conducting prenatal visits, annual examinations, and gynecological appointments, all within a regular 8-4 workday.
Comprehensive Women’s Health Care
Engdahl emphasizes the versatility of midwifery. “We are not surgeons, first of all, and we are specialists in low-risk pregnancy,” she explains. In addition to prenatal care, midwives provide full well-woman care similar to that offered by women’s health nurse practitioners. “We care for women from puberty through menopause,” she adds, clarifying a common misconception that women may not return after childbirth.
Engdahl encourages women to continue their health journey with midwives beyond pregnancy, saying, “No, no, please come back! We can take care of you.” This reflects the ongoing relationship midwives aim to build with their patients.
