Groundbreaking for Women’s and Children’s Hospital
BELPRE — In October, the Memorial Health System celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of its long-awaited Women’s and Children’s Hospital at the Belpre Medical Campus. This initiative represents a stride toward enhancing healthcare tailored for women and children in the region.
A Festive Kickoff
The ceremony was marked by vibrant performances from local school groups, including the Belpre High School Marching Band, along with various choirs and color guards. The uplifting atmosphere underscored the community’s enthusiasm for this vital project.
Gratitude from Leadership
Memorial Health System President and CEO J. Scott Cantley took a moment to acknowledge the attendance of numerous elected officials, stressing the collaborative effort behind the project.
A Partnership for Progress
The establishment of the Women’s and Children’s Campus is the result of a partnership with Akron Children’s Hospital, first announced in 2023. With an estimated budget of $125 million, this transformative project is being funded through private contributions and state support.
State Support and Vision
Governor Mike DeWine highlighted the state’s commitment, stating, “The state is investing $30 million in this venture. The collaboration between Memorial and Akron Children’s is an ideal fit, ensuring world-class care in this community.”
Improving Healthcare Accessibility
DeWine further explained that this facility will significantly enhance access to specialized medical services in Southeast Ohio, particularly neonatal intensive care, which often necessitated travel to major cities like Columbus and Akron.
A Commitment to Future Generations
“This hospital symbolizes a deep commitment to elevating healthcare in Southeast Ohio,” noted DeWine. “Our aim is straightforward: to help every child reach their full potential by eliminating healthcare barriers, be they physical or mental.”
Together Campaign Announcement
During the event, Dan Breece, Vice President of Physician Services and Chief Medical Officer, along with his wife Leah, introduced the Together Campaign. This fundraising initiative seeks to generate $50 million for the Women and Children’s Hospital Center and to create an endowment fund for future healthcare projects in the Mid-Ohio Valley. As of October, the campaign had successfully raised $37 million through generous contributions from local businesses and individuals.
Community Contributions
Breece highlighted significant donations, including “$2.5 million from Peoples Bank, a $1 million contribution from the Hall Financial Group, and another $1 million from the Archer family,” celebrating the community’s support.
Projected Opening
As the campaign progresses, totaling $38 million as of February 2025, only $12 million remains to reach the fundraising goal. The Women and Children’s Hospital is projected to open in roughly two years, promising to deliver essential medical care to families across the region.
