Residents of Mecklenburg County gathered today to commemorate Women’s Equality Day, an observance dedicated to recognizing women’s rights and achievements.
In a formal proclamation, the Board of County Commissioners designated August 26, 2025, as Women’s Equality Day in Mecklenburg County. This year’s celebration marks a significant milestone, the 105th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, which granted American women the right to vote.
The event was organized by the Mecklenburg County Women’s Advisory Board and held at Camp North End from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It aimed to highlight not only the progress made toward gender equality but also the ongoing struggles that women continue to face.
Entitled ‘Redefining Her Story: Bright Steps, Bold Futures,’ the celebration welcomed individuals from across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. The event was free to the public, fostering community spirit and engagement in discussions about gender equity.
Attendees enjoyed a variety of performances from local artists, including vocalist Ruby Edwards, spoken word artist Michelle Wright, and the Barre Belle Ballet. These cultural contributions added to the vibrant atmosphere of the day.
Women’s Equality Day was officially established by Congress in 1973 to commemorate the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. This day serves as an important reminder of the efforts that women continue to make toward achieving full equality in society.
As the community reflects on these historical milestones, the event represents both a celebration of progress and a call to action for further advancements in gender equity.
