Ryan McCarthy Named Head Coach of Fresno State Women’s Basketball
Fresno State University has officially announced the appointment of Ryan McCarthy as the new head coach of its women’s basketball program, marking a significant moment in the program’s history. McCarthy becomes the 12th individual to hold this position, succeeding previous head coach responsibilities.
In a statement reflecting his enthusiasm for the role, McCarthy expressed, “I am incredibly grateful to join the Fresno State family and serve as your women’s basketball head coach. A Proven Track Record
Prior to his appointment at Fresno State, McCarthy led the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team with remarkable success over 13 seasons. Under his leadership, the Seawolves achieved an overall record of 309 wins and 67 losses, resulting in an impressive winning percentage of .822. McCarthy’s coaching career spans 14 seasons, during which he has compiled a record of 323 wins and 80 losses.
Fresno State’s Director of Athletics, Garrett Klassy, praised McCarthy’s achievements, stating, “Ryan McCarthy is a winner. His track record speaks for itself, but what really stood out was his vision, his energy, and his relentless style of play.” Klassy added that McCarthy’s unique “Mayhem” system is expected to invigorate the game atmosphere and engage the Red Wave fan base.

McCarthy’s credentials include being a six-time Coach of the Year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). His tenure at Alaska Anchorage also featured remarkable milestones, including:
- Leading the team to the NCAA National Title Game in 2016.
- Producing six All-Americans and three GNAC Players of the Year.
- Honoring 22 players as 1st- or 2nd-team All-GNAC selections.
- Seeing seven players achieve professional basketball careers.
- Securing 16 wins over NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams and 11-8 record in the NCAA Tournament.
Coaching Experience and Background
Before his time at Alaska Anchorage, McCarthy worked at Northwest Nazarene University from 2007 to 2012 in various coaching roles, including assistant and interim head coach. His contributions helped guide the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances.
His professional playing career includes experience with the Tus Bramsche in Germany during the 2006-07 season, where he excelled in shooting statistics, and a stint with the Central Oregon Hotshots in the International Basketball League.
McCarthy is a former collegiate basketball star at Northwest Nazarene, where he earned notable individual accolades, including being named the Orrin Hills Male Athlete of the Year in 2005-06. He finished his collegiate career ranking third in his program’s history in three-pointers and racking up over 1,161 career points.
